From the words of LL Cool J’s song: “Don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years” would be a statement upon my return to Youth For Tomorrow. Hello, my name is Chris Coleman, a dually licensed therapist in the Commonwealth of Virginia (Licensed Professional Counselor & Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Provider), the Substance Abuse Program Manager, and I was an integral part of developing the substance abuse program for Youth For Tomorrow, from 2017-2019. Another hip-hop reference would be my return is like the rap group from the 1990’s, EPMD: Unfinished Business. While away in my private practice, I remained in contact, observing the changes and work being done, growth & expansions, even providing some consultation here and there, yet my heart was still here.
I possess a Masters degree in Addiction Counseling and a Master’s degree in professional counseling, and I have earned a degree in biblical studies. I am a Master Addiction Counselor (MAC) through NAADAC (The Association for Addiction Professionals), a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP), National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP/DOT). I have worked in residential, inpatient, outpatient, crisis centers, jails, prisons, locked facilities and with probation & parole. I currently serve on the state affiliate board of NAADAC, called Virginia Association of Addiction Professionals, or VAAP, as the writer of the newsletters on the communications team, and work with the Advocacy and membership team. I am also a Virginia approved Clinical Supervisor, and currently possess licenses to practice in North Carolina, Maryland, and Florida.
My career began working with at-risk youth in 1994, in a residential setting for substance use disorders, gang members, foster children and behavioral issues. My experiences and strengths are group therapy, substance use and co-occurring disorders, trauma, men’s issues, depression, anxiety disorders and anger management. My theoretical approach is eclectic; however, I primarily use Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral & Dialectical Behavioral, Solution-Focused, Client-Centered/Strength Based, and Schema Therapy. With that said, everything and anything I have and utilize, starts and ends with the gracious empowerment of a biblically based approach and skill, as I also provide Christian Counseling. Without The Lord leading, guiding and empowering me, I can do nothing. One of my mottos: “If it causes a problem, then it IS, a problem.” I look forward to working with you.

Hello and warm greetings! I am a Resident in Counseling with a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I graduated with my master’s in the Fall of 2023 from the University of the Cumberlands in Southeastern Kentucky. Beginning my residency in NOVA in September 2023, I have been able to work with children through adult populations of diverse backgrounds.
Entering counseling can be daunting, especially when coming for the first time. In sessions, I aim for you to feel truly seen and heard. I aspire to empower my clients and help them to lead meaningful lives, however, that looks to you. Presence matters. The therapeutic encounter can be very unique in that it is a helping relationship meant for the healing and growth of the person seeking services. In sessions, I find joy in providing a safe space where you are valued. At times, I also utilize silence as a meaningful and powerful tool.
My primary work is with anxiety, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), adjustment issues, and relationship conflicts. My approach utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and techniques from mindfulness and logotherapy. Outside of counseling, I enjoy spending time in nature, going out with friends, exercising, and traveling.
In life, we can be surprised by what doors may be opened if we simply embrace the opportunity to knock.
